Originally released in November 23, 1999. S&M -an abbreviation of Symphony and Metallica. The "S" in the stylized "S&M" on the album cover is a backwards treble clef, while the "M" is taken from Metallica's logo.

This live album was recorded with the San Francisco Symphony and conducted by Michael Kamen combining heavy metal with a classical approach.

The 6LP version is produced on 180g 45RPM vinyl for premium quality sound.The heavy 12" records come in outer 350gsm sleeves with ‘machine’ varnish, casewrapped lift off lid box with ‘machine’ varnish, 2x lyric sheet insert & belly band.
