Forty-two years ago Trojan Records first came into being. Formed as a conduit for the hottest new sounds from Jamaica, the company went on to release music by every influential Kingston-based producer of the era and in doing so came to dominate the British Reggae market. Within a year of its launch, it had cracked the UK Pop market, with a number of major hits by acts virtually unknown outside the Caribbean.
It was a trend that continued well into the seventies, yet in '75, the company spectacularly crashed, resulting in its acquisition by new owners. Over the years since, the label has changed hands on three more occasions, with each new custodian contributing to its reputation today as the world's greatest reggae imprint.
The Heavy Heavy Monster Sound features twenty of the hits that brought Trojan to mainstream consciousness, along with an equal number of lesser known tracks from the archives, almost all of which have remained unavailable since their original issue. This must- have collection not only provides a fascinating introduction to this historic label, but also highlights some of the best in reggae sounds over the past four decades.
