Digitally remastered debut full length album from seminal Paul Weller led soul-funksters The Style Council.
Breaking up The Jam at arguably the height of their popularity, Paul Weller dazzles with this addictive mix of politically charged lyrics and jazz infused soul.
Weller’s leap of creative faith is rewarded with hit singles from the album; ‘You’re The Best Thing’ and ‘My Ever Changing Moods'.
The esoteric mix of influences are introduced by instrumental ‘Mick's Blessings’ which blends a woeful pun with a dexterously played catchy riff that immediately indicates the type of direction this group are heading in.
Weller explains “When I first started talking about doing the collective with Mick I got this great big box of records and gave them to him to go away and listen to. I said, "you’ll see what I am looking to do from these." There were old soul and R&B albums in there and a bit of jazz too. It was a musical reference for him.”‘You're the Best Thing’ must rank alongside the very best ballads written by any British artist, and ‘Headstart for Happiness’ lifts the mood & makes the feet tap whether you want them to or not.
‘My Ever Changing Moods’ captures Weller at arguably his vocal best, with an accompaniment from Mick Talbot that shows just what a discerning pianist he can be.
Divers as ever ‘Dropping Bombs On The Whitehouse’ is a red hot jazz instrumental which catches some superb individual performances. This is an album well worth investing in.
