Julie Ann Baenziger is a Californian singer/multi-instrumentalist whose debut album is awash with ambient folk, with the songs acting as a canvas for creating landscapes of withdrawn emotion that recall Midlake’s The Trials of Van Occupanther. Baenziger has created an inspired sound that echoes of a rural setting rather than urban density.
Upon listening, it is difficult to imagine that this is Baenziger's first full-length album. She exhibits such technical mastery along with exquisite musical arrangements. The layers of piano, glockenspiel, slide and marimba sit fittingly with the warmth of background rhythms. Some songs are melancholic, some are composed - there is a definite balance of emotion swimming within this brilliant debut.
