Ringleader of the Tormentors captures Morrissey at his most tender and cinematic. Two years after his You Are The Quarry return, this eighth solo offering sees Morrissey venturing into more orchestral territory (as the cover art suggests) the songs are as dark as ever, but presented in such a delicate and raw way. An emotive look at life approaching 50 from Manchester's favourite son.
It's difficult to follow such a celebrated comeback as You Are The Quarry but, with Ringleader Of The Tormentors, Morrissey hits the spot, courting the public's renewed interest in him with an instrumentally and emotionally charged release.
The shamelessly lurid 'Dear God, Please Help Me' is complimented with string arrangement by film composer Ennio Morricone, while single 'You Have Killed Me' is as timeless as anything Morrissey has written. Tony Visconti's production is the poultice to Morrissey's drawn out pain and in Ringleader of the Tormentors they have created what Morrissey describes as, "the most beautiful - perhaps the most gentle, so far."
