The premise of Finnish cello-playing quartet performing Metallica's hits may seem audacious initially, but, not for the first time, the metal giants' repertoire interprets surprisingly well into this "classical" rendition. The quartet's avid comprehension of the music is the true defining point on this album. Apocalyptica's careful attention to detail, dynamics and subsequently flawless performance will undoubtedly intrigue even the skeptical fan.
Apocalyptica are four long haired classical music students who specialise in rocking Metallica covers with their 18th century cellos. Metallica's Lars Ulrich has claimed to be a big fan of the group who has appeared on MTV in light of the project. While Apocalyptica concentrates on classics such as "Enter Sandman," "Sad But True" and "Wherever I May Roam", it is the early, more complex compositions, including "Master of Puppets," "Creeping Death," and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," which fittingly resonate this extraordinary album.
