Unleashed in 1988, Metallica's And Justice For All marked the band's gear-shift from underground heroes to the major league. Containing the band's first Top 40 single, the horror-filled 'One', the album's hard-hitting lyrics and darkly intense feel struck a nerve with their ever-growing fanbase who propelled it to Number Six on the Billboard chart.
While Metallica had dealt with their grief by hitting the road soon after Cliff Burton's death, And Justice For All was their first studio album recorded with his replacement, Jason Newsted. And despite the emotional difficulties of continuing without their friend, the band insisted that he would have wanted them to carry on.
Here's what Lars had to say at the time of the album's release: 'We always miss Cliff, but he is kind of on the record. The song 'To Live Is To Die' is really based on a number of riffs that Cliff wrote a couple of years ago. It's kind of cool to have something written by Cliff on the new album. I know Cliff, more than anyone else in the band, would have been the first guy to give us a kick in the ass, and wouldn't want us to sit around. It's what he would have wanted us to do.'
