Sound Affects sees The Jam experimenting with new sounds on this, the Japanese, paper sleeved edition of their fifth album.
In contrast to the punk-tinged style that won them so many fans on earlier releases, this album finds the band moving firmly into the post-punk era, to huge critical acclaim and massive success.
Home to many of The Jam’s most beloved hits, including the now-iconic ‘That’s Entertainment’, Sound Affects reveals a band at the height of their powers.
Relying on sparser production than its predecessor, Setting Sons, and dealing with esoteric themes along with the band’s trademark story-telling and agit-prop, it marked a new interest in the sound of bands like Gang Of Four, the beats of ska, and in the psychedelic experimentation of The Beatles’ 1966 classic Revolver.
In fact, the intro to the Number One single, ‘Start!’ reveals that link most clearly, with its bassline being lifted directly from George Harrison's album opener ‘Taxman’.
