About this product

All Mod Cons is The Jam's third album and among their most revered.

Featuring the singles ‘A Bomb In Wardour Street’ and ‘Down In the Tube Station At Midnight’ the album dishes up grim snapshots of everyday violence but leavens the grit with humour and compassion.

This deluxe version also boasts a documentary packed with archive footage and interviews with the band.

While The Jam’s long-standing love of early 60’s bands and mod sounds resounds through all their albums, it is Paul Weller's newfound love affair with The Kinks that sets this album’s tone.

In the melodic lyricism of tracks like ‘Mr Clean’ and ‘Billy Hunt’ The Jam find a sound of their own between punk and pop.

The band even covers a track by their mentors, a fantastic staccato version of the classic, ‘David Watts’, also released on a double A-side as the album’s lead single.

And while the punk anger lingers, there’s plenty more hearts and flowers than on previous Jam efforts: beautiful tunes like ‘Fly’ and ‘English Rose’ are heartfelt, pastoral paeans that would not feel out of place on the gentlest folk album.

All Mod Cons is especially exhilerating for the way it charts both Paul Weller's development as a songwriter and the band's broadening musical scope beyond three chord punk fixations.
