This magnificent 3LP set of Who's Next, is the phoenix risen from the ashes of Pete Townshend's incomplete project Lifehouse.
The Who's fifth album heralds the beginning of a love affair with synthesisers which serves to punctuate the group's timeless rock musings.
Although he has had a love/hate relationship with Who's Next, Pete Townshend now cites is as the best album the band have ever done: "It's the album I try to look at as a standard in a way."
From the off, Who's Next is very much a Pete Townshend-led production and one he attempted to bag a production credit for.
But suffering nervous exhaustion after the doomed Lifehouse project, he had to down tools and ask producer Glyn Johns to step in.
Glyn's influence is palpable, "Every time we went back in we were just getting astounded at the sounds he was producing."
Somehow, despite the recipe for disaster - with tensions in the group and nagging creative doubts - Who's Next was a massive success, going 3x platinum in America.
This 3LP set is especially effective for listening to monsters like 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and the synth- laden 'Baba O'Riley'. Who's Next is the classic that almost never was.
