The theme of much of Boy is about childhood and adolescence, and includes deeply personal lyrics from Bono dealing with loss and sexual awakening. Originally forming in 1976, rehearsing in drummer Larry Mullen's parent's kitchen - the band comprised a group of school friends from a Dublin suburb not yet able to play their instruments.

Bono took over lead vocals on account of his not inconsiderable charisma, and the band quickly became famous in their hometown. The tracks on Boy were chosen from nearly 40 songs that U2 had written during their formative years, and remain a sparkling document of energy, exuberance and youth.
