Marilyn Manson's sophomore release, Antichrist Superstar, saw the band move from cult band into mainstream consciousness (with protests at its anti-Christian ethos, of course). It introduced the world to Manson's mix of progressive metal and industrial rock and features the singles 'The Beautiful People' and 'Tourniquet'.
With a tongue in cheek nod to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar (witnessed on 'Angel with the Scabbed Wings'), Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar is the first of three concept albums. The album charts our protagonist's journey from 'worm' to fascistic tyrant through three cycles as revealed by Manson: "When I first conceived of Antichrist Superstar, I set out to create an apocalypse. But I didn't realise it was going to be a personal one... I had to shed my skin, purge my emotions, and experience every extreme."
