Melody Gardot's velvety vocals and sultry jazz piano instantly transport you to a dimly-lit, after-hours speakeasy, a French chanson bar haunted by the ghost of Edith Piaf or a tiny Brazilian salsa club. Often compared to the likes of Norah Jones and Madeleine Peyroux, Melody Gardot doesn't see herself as a 'jazz singer', but rather explores musical genres such as blues, jazz and folk on her debut album Worrisome Heart and Latin American, bossa nova and samba rhythms on her second album, My One And Only Thrill.
A promising painter and fashion enthusiast, Melody Gardot was struck down by a car at the age of 19 while riding her bicycle and suffered serious injuries that left her unable to walk or speak, and with short and long-term memory loss, for quite some time. Melody summoned an incredible inner strength and taught herself how to live and express herself again through music therapy, a technique that she strongly promotes, and this constant battle with pain characterises her music and raw, emotional lyrics.
People always ask, 'Why jazz?' and I'm like 'Why not?' It's kind of like asking Seurat, 'Why so many dots?'![]()
